Reflexology is a complementary therapy based on the belief that there are reflex areas in the feet and hands which are believed to correspond to all organs and parts of the body, Some practitioners may also include work on points found in the face and ears. Reflexology works on an individual basis and may alleviate and improve symptoms such as everyday stress and tension.
During a typical reflexology session the reflexologist will take a detailed medical history. Sessions are usually performed in a comfortable chair or couch. If it is to be performed on the feet, the client will be asked to remove footwear and socks but other forms of reflexology require no removal of clothing. The practitioner will make a visual and tactile examination of the area to be worked before beginning the precise reflexology massage movements. The particular types of movements involved require the application of an appropriate pressure using the thumb and fingers.
Reflexology can be a wonderfully relaxing experience where you can take time out from everyday pressures. The therapist's expert touch will help you relax which can help improve mood, aid sleep and relieve tension. The result is an overall sense of wellbeing.
Indian Head Massage
Massage has always been a part of everyday life in India. For Indian mothers, massage is regarded as an essential skill. From the age of 3 or 4 children receive a daily or weekly head massage, given with a selection of oils to help prevent scalp disorders, make hair grow stronger and boost brain power. According to Ayuervedic custom, a weekly massage is recommended to promote soft skin and strong shiny hair and maintain a healthy balance of doshas, vital energies or forces within the body.
The concept of Indian Head Massage as a complementary therapy was first introduced in the UK by Dr. Narendra Mehta, he missed the benefits of a regular head massage whilst away from India and developed it in the West.
Indian head massage can be performed anywhere as no special equipment is required and the client does not have to remove any clothing, all that is needed is a comfortable upright chair and somewhere quiet.
Indian Head Massage works on both the physical and psychological levels at the same time. Massage can relax tense and tight muscles, ease aches and pains, mobilise the joints and regulate circulation. It can help to relieve nasal congestion, eye strain, allergies, asthma, tension headaches, and back pain. As the physical aches and pains are rubbed away, you may start to feel calmer and more able to cope with daily pressures in a relaxed and positive frame of mind.
The deep physical and mental relaxation induced by massage may be effective in relieving the symptoms of stress, thus preventing serious health problems. Massage gives you time to unwind, allows the mind to relax and recharge and to put problems back into perspective. The physical contact can also boost self esteem and bring about a sense of self-awareness and can also bring a great sense of emotional relief.
Most people that have experienced the benefits of massage never look back, the benefits can be huge. I know I for one will have a regular monthly massage for the rest of my life.
We can find evidence that massage has been used throughout history, it was recorded in China as early as 3000BC, the Greeks used massage as part of their everyday fitness and exercise regimes and the Romans used massage within their many bathing establishments to treat stiff and sore muscles and joints.
Lots of people have massage for relaxation, which helps alleviate stress, very important as it is believed that 75% of disease is caused by stress. However, as well as soothing and relaxing it is also stimulating. The systems of the body are all stimulated by massage.
The skin benefits as massage promotes cell regeneration and helps exfoliation, skin tone, colour and texture are all improved.
The muscles are relaxed and the fibres smoothed and any knots ironed out preventing spasm and stiffness and improving flexibility.
The circulation is stimulated which improves blood flow and in turn enables valuable nutrients, and hormones to reach the cells of the body quicker.
The digestion is improved, this speeds up the delivery of nutrients and the removal of waste preventing constipation.
The nervous system can be relaxed or stimulated, if stimulated the nerves can be woken up and the body energised, if relaxed the nerves will be calmed and tension released.
As massage is so relaxing, the breathing will become deeper and more relaxed, this will help oxygen to be absorbed and carbon dioxide to be removed more effectively.
The improved circulation will also aid the urinary system, waste removal will be more efficient allowing the body to excrete toxins faster.
As the lymphatic system has no pump like the heart then massage is invaluable in stimulating the circulation of lymph around the body. This will improve waste removal, boost immunity and reduce swelling caused by too much fluid in cells.
As well as the physical benefits, massage allows you to spend time relaxing the mind, time to switch off and be soothed by the therapist. This reduces anxiety, stress and tension, it provides comfort and gives a lift to the emotions increasing positive feelings.
Long term massage treatments will increase energy levels and improve body awareness and self esteem.
If you have never experienced a massage before then why not give it a try, I don't think you will regret it!
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It is especially helpful for tight muscles in the neck, shoulders and upper back, lower back, and leg muscles.
Some of the same strokes are used as in the holistic/swedish type of massage, but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain in order to reach the deeper layers of muscles.
Where there is chronic muscle tension or injury, there are usually adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles. Adhesions can block circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inflammation.
Deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down these adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement. At certain points during the massage, most people find there is usually some discomfort and pain. It is important to tell the therapist when things hurt and if any soreness or pain you experience is outside your comfort range.
There is usually some stiffness or pain after a deep tissue massage, but it should subside within a day or so.
Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage usually focuses on a specific problem, such as chronic muscle pain, injury rehabilitation, and the following conditions:
- Chronic pain
- Lower back pain
- Limited mobility
- Recovery from injuries
- Postural problems
- Muscle tension in the hamstrings, gluteals, IT band, legs, quadriceps, rhomboids, upper back
Hot Stone Massage
The ancient healing art of stone massage, a modality for physical and spiritual balancing has roots in Native American traditions and beliefs. This therapy uses various massage techniques working in harmony with warm stones to relax the body at its deepest level. By using the gentle transformational properties of minerals in the stones helps to promote relaxation as well as eliminating negative energy within the clients mind, body and spirit.
Hot Stone Massage uses Basalt stones, a dark heavy lava that is found the world over which contain Iron ore, an excellent conductor of heat. creating the ultimate in natural heat penetration.
However gentle it may seem, this massage enables the therapist to reach ten times deeper than through the use of mere fingers, making it more intense than a normal Swedish massage.
The benefits of Hot Stone Massage include muscle relaxation, improvement of blood circulation, recharging of energy levels and stress relief. A number of health conditions can benefit from Hot Stone Massage including muscle and back pain, arthritis, circulatory problems, insomnia, depression, stress and anxiety and MS.
Most of all Hot Stone Massages are best suited for people who deserve some nurturing and pampering!
The oldest recorded use of ear candles is by Native American Indians from South West America, believed to have used them at medicinal ceremonies and religious rituals. The ear candle is cylindrical, up to 12 inches in length and has a filter at one end to protect the ear from any residue falling in while the candle is burning. It is made of Linen, beeswax, herbal extracts such as Sage and St John's wort and honey.
The lighted candle is placed in the ear and held by the therapist until it has burned down sufficiently, (usually around 10-12 minutes), each ear is treated in turn. Once both ears have been treated you will then receive a relaxing facial massage which will help to drain the sinuses and further enhance the results of your treatment.
How do they work?
A light suction action (chimney effect) along with movement of the flame creates vibration of air in the candle generating a massaging effect on the eardrum and ossicle bones. This action mimics sound waves. The oxygen in the ear drum is replaced by vapours from the burning candle. The vapours move through the filter. The temperature increases in the ear canal and leads to a change in pressure in areas that have become congested. This soothing action balances pressure in the ears and sinuses. Treatment may cause easier breathing, an increased sense of smell and relaxation.
Some conditions that may be eased by ear candling include Sinusitis, Snoring, Labyrinthitis, excessive ear wax, glue ear, frequent colds and Flu, headaches and migraines, Tinnitus and travel sickness.
This is a wonderfully soothing treatment, helping to relieve pressure and inducing a feeling of complete calm.
